I have personally been on the receiving end of some
pretty unhelpful platitudes. When I’m walking through a
trial, it is just not helpful to hear things like, “You must be
doing something right because the enemy doesn’t mess with
people who aren’t living for God,” or “God works all things
together,” or “God doesn’t give you any more than you can
handle.” I realize the truth that “28we are convinced that
every detail of our lives is continually woven together for
good, for we are His lovers who have been called to fulfill His
designed purpose” (Romans 8:28, TPT). But can we agree
that not every truth is a comfort. At least not in the middle of
a trial. I also understand that Satan’s minions are more likely
to mess with a believer who is living in and stepping out
in faith. The problem is that when I’m walking through the
muck, all that makes me want to do is retreat so the enemy
will quit messing with me.
And that last platitude, “God doesn’t give us more than
we can handle,” well, it’s not just unhelpful, it’s also not
biblical. In fact, God knows that there’s no way we can handle
life without Him. I’ve walked through so many things that
I honestly couldn’t handle on my own that I’ve lost count.
God wants us to rely on Him. He wants us to trust Him
and realize that His answers are always the best answers. He
allows us to walk through things beyond our limitations, so
we realize how desperately we need Him. His way isn’t just an
option. It’s the only way.
